Frequently Asked Questions


Junior School Ages

  • Pre-school age is 3 years & 6 months to 5 years old
  • Pre-primary age is 5 years and above until the exam has been passed
  • Primary age is 6 years and above only once the Pre-primary exam has been passed
  • There are RAD age limits on exams so some children may be kept longer in a level until they reach the correct age.
  • ​Incoming students may be asked to provide copies of exam certificates
  • ​​Please Note: Classes with less than 4 students will be combined with classes from the other branches

What is PACANZ and the National Young Performer Award

PACANZ is the Performing Arts Competitions Association of New Zealand and every year they hold the NYPA across 8 Art disciplines, ballet will next be featured in 2020. Entry is by Nomination from member competition societies like Bays School of Dance, Tauranga Competition Society etc (a full list can be found on the PACANZ website).

RAD International Summer School

Once every 4 years the Royal Academy of Dance holds an International Summer School in Wellington. There are two, 1-week Graded level Summer School courses, a 2-week Vocational Performance course, culminating in two exciting performances in front of an audience, and a Teachers Course. Faculty come from around the world and nationally to impart their knowledge and love of dance to the participants.  The next International Summer School will be held in January 2020.
